Why I Remember A Boy Made Me Cry

Artist Playground’s Playlist, Track 2: I Remember A Boy is very special to my family and I, as my eldest daughter Mariella not only acts in it but also directed this musical review about a group of friends who reunite at a cafe they once frequented in their college years. They recall how their friendship came together, fell in love and eventually gone their separate ways.

This breakthrough show features OPM (Original Pilipino Music) classics from the 70’s and 80’s such as Di Na Natuto, Sometime Somewhere, Araw Gabi, Limang Dipang Tao, Lumapit Ka, Miss Maganda and Jose Mari Chan’s I Remember The Boy to name a few and was brilliantly arranged by Jesse Lucas who is the Musical Director and the only non-millennial in the production.

I really did not know what to expect when I first saw I Remember A Boy last year. As the show unfolded, I caught myself feeling sentimental, nostalgic and yes I admit even emotional. It was full of heart. Ayu Martinez did a great job in writing the script where she cleverly incorporated the songs in the story and worked so well in bringing to life Mariella’s vision.

Everyone who saw it was raving about how a simple story with timeless Pinoy songs performed by gifted artists can evoke so many emotions. As the house lights went on, you could see people in tears. It clearly showed that it touched them in a very special way.

Suffice to say this show written, directed, acted and produced by millennials was a resounding success.

The second run features twelve young, talented and gifted thespians that are making a name in the theatre scene today. Kathleen Francisco and Gian Gloria alternate as SHAYNE, Cathrine Go and Nina Macalino share the role of KATE, Philippe Go and Kendrick Ibasco alternate as EERO, Joe Henson and Vyen Villanueva as CARLO, Mariella Laurel and Shalee Vicencio as ELLIE, Miko Manguba and Jon Abella alternate as DAVID.

Don’t miss the chance to watch I Remember A Boy, a fresh yet nostalgic story of love and friendship that transcends time.
