Why Himala, Isang Musikal Is A Hit

Aicelle Santos as Elsa and David Ezra as Orly

When I found out that The Sandbox Collective and 9 Works Theatrical was bringing Ishmael Bernal’s haunting masterpiece back to the stage, the first thing that came to my mind was that it was a brave move on their part considering that it would be their first venture in mounting a Pilipino musical after making a name for themselves as a formidable theatre company that produces critically acclaimed English productions.

I remember watching the original production 15 years ago at the CCP (Cultural Center of the Philippines) and I was so impressed with the whole show from the music to the actors that brought Ricky Lee’s masterpiece to life. I was wondering how they were going to stage it this time. Well I got my answer the day I watched the Preview Show where the original cast were in attendance and the woman who portrayed Elsa in the film, the one and only Superstar, Nora Aunor was in the audience.

From the moment I entered the Power MAC Center Spotlight in Circuit Makati I was immediately transported to Barrio Cupang, the setting of the play. I knew I was in for something very special and true enough as the show began I felt it immediately, I was hooked. Director Ed Lacson did a phenomenal job of stripping the material down to its core and presented us a riveting tale of greed, hysteria and compromised morals. Vince de Jesus powerful music became even more stirring this time around with just a piano as accompaniment, which allowed the actors more room for emotions to take center stage.

Aicelle Santos’ tour-de-force performance as Elsa, a young girl who claims to have the power to heal after seeing a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary will forever be etched in the memories of those that have seen her and the rest of the cast as they showcased power, restraint, vulnerability and maturity.  Bituin Escalante as Nanay Silang, Kakki Teodoro as Nimia, Sandino Martin as Pilo, Neomi Gonzales as Chayong, David Ezra as Orly, Floyd Tena as Pari, Alvin Maghanoy as Nestoy and the rest of the ensemble’s performance was so riveting my heart wanted to explode.  What I witnessed was a company of  giving actors and it is through their generosity that this show became a success.

Himala, Isang Musikal is a heartrending theatrical masterpiece that pierces the soul.

I needed two days to recover from this theatrical gem. Even as I write this, I cannot help but feel the emotions I experienced the night I watched. Yes it was heavy and thought provoking but at the same time it made me feel good because this production showcased the brilliance of the Filipino artist.

From Opening Night to the penultimate weekend, audiences filled the theater to the brim and have left with nothing but praise. Himala, Isang Musikal is a certified hit. There is one last chance to watch the show on March 10.  I highly suggest you go and buy your tickets now. You cannot miss it.
